Once there lived a 38 year-old woman named Hope. Hope lost her husband in a car accident. To educate her son and daughter, Hope rented a tiny shack-hotel at one of the busiest beaches of Goa. The rent was less because the hotel was at the end of the beach.

Days passed, Hope gave the shack-hotel all she had but it wasn’t giving the expected profits. While the other shacks were always filled with people, Hope’s shack hardly had 3-4 people coming in throughout the day.

She thought, “How will I pay the school fees? Shall I borrow money from the relatives, but then they will always have an upper-hand on me. What else shall I do? I can’t loose hope, I have to stay strong for the kids. From tomorrow, I will go to the middle of the beach and start calling out to people. I can’t just sit here and wait for them to come in.”

Hope’s way of calling people worked but the profits still looked pale.

One day, a stray dog came wandering to the beach. The dog was super-thin, covered with ticks and stunk like hell. “Eeeuu, go away, you filthy dog..”, “Shoo, shoo, don’t you come near my shacks..”, “Get away or I will kick you, hurrrr,” all the shack owners shouted at the dog in disgust.

The dog was extremely hungry and thirsty. It kept walking on the beach until it reached Hope’s shack. Hope helped the dog with food and water and left for home.

Next morning when Hope came back, the dog was still there. It wagged it’s tail and started jumping in excitement. For a moment, Hope forgot all her worries and said, “Ohh, you are still here.. Well, you can stay at the hotel. I get bored throughout the day waiting for customers, you can give me company. Shall I call you, umm.. Hailey?” The dog jumped in excitement as if it wanted to say, “Yes.”

In next few weeks, Hailey started looking like the most adorable dog ever.. Her fur became super-soft and she gained weight. Soon Hope and Hailey became inseparable. They found comfort and strength within each other.

Hailey followed Hope everywhere. When Hope would go to the middle of the beach to request people to dine-in at her hotel, Hailey would follow. Slowly Hailey understood that every time someone comes to the hotel, Hope becomes happy and when someone doesn’t come, she gets depressed.

Hailey didn’t like seeing Hope sad. So next time when Hope went to the middle of the beach, as usual Hailey followed. But this time, instead of Hope, Hailey started requesting people. She rolled in front of the people, jumped in the air, shook paws with people’s hand and did various tricks. Seeing a dog do such unbelievable tricks, the people at the beach and nearby shack-hotels started taking videos of Hailey.

Slowly, Hailey walked towards Hope’s shack and people followed. After reaching to the shack, Hailey went and sat at the cash counter. People again started clicking pictures… and that was the first time Hope’s shack was packed with people. Hope was shocked to see Hailey do all this. At the end of the day, Hope and Hailey went to the beach and played to celebrate their success.

From next day on, every day Hailey would go to the middle of the beach alone and get people to Hope’s hotel with her magical tricks. In just 3 months, the profits boomed and all Hope’s challenges were solved.

Years later, Hope bought the shack-hotel and named it “Hope and Hailey.” Hailey died of old age but her babies are still following their mother’s tricks and leading people to Hope’s shack. A tear rolls down Hope’s cheek every time a customer asks about the history behind name of the shack-hotel.
